Researcher Spotlight - Dr Rosa Sánchez-Lucas

Boosting Tree Immunity! It’s National #PlantHealthWeek. Action Oak is proud to support the #WomenInScience who are doing incredible work defending the UK’s native oak trees. We’re pleased to support Dr Rosa Sánchez-Lucas, University of Birmingham, with this Researcher Spotlight.

Dr Rosa Sánchez-Lucas, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham, explores how we can boost plant immunity to protect forests. Working with oak seedlings, she studies how treatments with natural chemical compounds present in plants can protect trees against diseases such as powdery mildew. Her findings reveal how plants activate metabolic responses and strengthen physical barriers, helping them fight off pathogens. She also investigates how rising atmospheric CO₂ levels may alter trees' ability to develop immunity and retain a ‘memory’ of past stress, key to long-term resilience in changing climates.
