National Plant Health Week & National Hedgerow Week!
This week is National Plant Health Week.
Healthy plants and trees are vital for our survival and provide us with many benefits, but our plant health is under threat from pests and diseases and climate change. Our plants also provide an annual value to our society of £15.7billion. Plants help us breathe plants produce 98% of the oxygen we breathe.
Plants help fight climate change: It is estimated that 4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide is stored in UK forests. Trees are the ultimate multi-taskers in the fight against climate change.
During this week we will be sharing with you some of the work Action Oak is involved in, as well as some pests and disease that have the potential to put our oak population under threat. Watch out for our latest Researcher Spotlight with Dr Rosa Sánchez-Lucas, University of Birmingham, and find out what you can do to help support our work.
It is also National Hedgerow Week. The British landscape is shaped by hundreds of thousands of miles of hedge; providing wildlife with a sheltered and bountiful habitat network. Oak trees can often be found in hedges, providing an array of services from strength and resilience to providing a habitat to some of the 2000 species that hedgerows support.
At Action Oak our mission is to lead the vital work and research to protect our native oak trees and safeguard their future. We work with partners on the vital work and research needed to protect the UK’s native oak trees and safeguard their future.
We have to take action to protect our Oaks.
